Safe Plate ("we", "us", or "our") operates the Safe Plate mobile application ("App") and website ("Website"). By using Safe Plate, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.

Information Collection and Use

Dietary Profile Data

We use Apple's technologies (including SwiftData and, where applicable, Health and location services) to store and process information related to your dietary needs. This may include:

Allergies and intolerances you select in the app
Dietary preferences and restrictions (e.g. vegetarian, vegan, halal)
Your preferred language

Your dietary profile is stored locally on your device and used to personalise how information is shown to you. It is only sent to our servers when needed to analyse a menu for you (see “Menu X-Ray Data” below).

Menu X-Ray Data

When you use Menu X-Ray to analyse a restaurant menu, we may process:

Menu photos you take or select from your library
Menu PDFs you upload
URLs to online menus you provide
Location data you choose to share so we can associate a scan with a restaurant (approximate restaurant-level location, not precise tracking of you as a person)
Your dietary profile (allergies and restrictions) so we can highlight potential issues in the menu

This data is used to extract text from menus, detect ingredients, and highlight potential allergens or conflicts with your preferences. We do not use this information for marketing or advertising.

Analytics

We collect anonymised analytics to understand how Safe Plate is used and to improve stability and user experience. This may include:

App version and iOS version
Basic device information (e.g. device model)
Feature usage (for example, how often Menu X-Ray is used)
Performance metrics and error diagnostics

Analytics are collected via privacy-focused tooling such as TelemetryDeck and are sent without personal identifiers.

Menu X-Ray and AI Processing

Menu X-Ray uses artificial intelligence to interpret menus and highlight potential issues for you. To provide this feature, we may temporarily send menu images, extracted text and your dietary profile to our servers, where they are processed using third-party AI providers, including:

Anthropic (Claude)
Mistral AI
Google (Gemini)

These providers analyse menu content to help identify ingredients and possible allergens. We do not use the results for advertising, and we do not sell your data.

Menu images and PDFs are not permanently stored. They are processed for a short period and then expire automatically. We may keep anonymised menu data (such as ingredient lists and dish names, without any personal identifiers) to improve the overall quality of Menu X-Ray for all users.

Cookies and Website Data

The Safe Plate website uses cookies to provide basic functionality and optional analytics. You can manage your cookie preferences at any time via the cookie settings on the website.

Security

We take commercially reasonable steps to protect your information, including using encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS) and limiting how long sensitive data is kept. No method of electronic storage or transmission is completely secure, but we strive to protect your data as well as we can.

Your Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights such as accessing, correcting or deleting your data, limiting how it is processed, or objecting to certain uses. You can:

Delete scans and your profile directly in the app
Uninstall the app to remove local data from your device
Contact us if you have questions about your privacy or would like help

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated “Last Updated” date. Your continued use of Safe Plate after changes are posted means you accept the updated policy.
